Friday and Saturday the 19th and 20th of August I attended the Stash Busters Party.  And we sewed and sewed and sewed.  It was wonderful.  The pattern we used was Cozy Quilt Designs, Radiant by Daniela Stout.  I made two quilt tops and was worn out when done on Saturday evening.  All the quilts turned out BEAUTIFUL.

Megan and I are trying to start a business of sewing and embroidery.  We have created a Facebook page to help us.  GentleHearted Creations.  It is of course slow going.  But we are getting started.    If you are a Facebook member you can view the page with this link.  GentleHearted Creations

Here are some monogrammed towels I did just recently.  They are reverse monogramming.

Last night I went to sit and sew at the church and we are starting to cut out our quilt.  Well kinda!  I bought my book a few months ago and I have torn the house apart twice looking for it.  Well yesterday before sit and sew I figured I would never find it.  So I ordered a new one.  At sit and sew Justine let me look at hers for what I needed.  (thank you 🙂 )  Well I said as soon as the other book gets here I will find the first one and guess what?  It did not take that long I found it last night!!!!!!!  Oh well.   So now we have to get things cut out because we will start sewing in October.

I am using Moda, Civil War Crossings by Barbara Brackman.  It is BEAUTIFUL.  I bought the large fat quarter bundle and am going to get some coordinates to do the sashing, border, binding and backing.  I have never done a quilt with civil war materials.  I usually go for the brighter ones.  But I think I am really going to like this one.   I am making the 12″ blocks, 16 of them and the last one tells a story about the quilt.  I can’t wait to get started sewing.  I think I better have the HQ Sixteen up and running by then!!!!  I will want to quilt this one right away.  Then maybe I will quilt a few of the other ones I have ready to go.  (Maybe lol)

I have finish another purse.  yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

This one is a Moon Shine Designs purse called the Paddington Satchel.  I made it with Moda fabric from the Sonnect collection.

I learned several things making this one.  That when a pattern calls for rigilene (or they spelled it rigiline)  it is polyester corset boning.  It was used around the top of the bag to give the opening some stiffness so it stays open.  It works really great! – but you need a machine with some power and ability to go through really thick spots.   Also for the piping I used (believe it or not) weed eater line instead of nylon piping.   lol  It gave it a bit of extra pop and stiffness to the piping and worked really well.

Well when I started quilting I asked my Aunt who made the quilt I had on my bed as a child and I learned that my Grandmother Hemmes did.  Now I may have been told that before but I don’t remember it.  (Remember I am 52 lol)  My brother and I each had one on our twin bunk beds.  Not long before my Mother passed away in 2003 she gave my brother and I these quilts from her house.  While I would never have gotten rid of it how neat it was to find out my Grandmother actually made these.  (Funny the things you find out when you start asking questions)   So I am guessing it is atleast 48 years old or older now and somewhat yellowed around the edges.  These are hand made and tied not quilted with thread.  Then today after going up to EnChanted Yarn and Fibers to do some spinning I found out something else about the quilt.   I called my Aunt on the way home (as I usually do) and we talked about my learning to spin.  We talked about wool and raising Alpaca and she told me she wished she had kept all of Grandmother’s things now that I was learning to do all this stuff.  That the wool in the quilt (the batting is wool in this old quilt) was from my Great Uncle’s sheep farm (two old bachlor brothers, one of which was a twin to my Grandfather Hemmes) and that Grandmother had hand carded this wool for the batting in the quilt.  Now I think that is just too cool and I wish they had kept all of Grandmother’s tools to do this with, but still just think if I had not started quilting and spinning I would probably never have learned all this stuff.   Maybe doing all this stuff is just in my blood!   Thanks Gramma!

Well, we went to the quilt show yesterday in Paducah, KY.  It was incredible!  When I look at those quilts and then what I do in the way of quilting I know I am just a beginner.  (someone else said that but it goes for me too, I am sure she won’t mind my repeating it, lol)  The workmanship is fabulous and the designs are also.  We got a great demonstration on the big Gammill Long Arm Quilter and the Statler Stitcher.   It is by far the cadallic of the quilters in my opinion.  (yes, I want one, no I won’t be getting one any time soon)  Going to those shows inspires me to do more and try new things.
